Off the Cuff – Edition 99
By Eric Barrett

Comics, Cartoons, and all things related

*So last week I posted column 99 to Still on the Shelf and I didn't really think much about it. I figured it was a short column, and probably not a lot to comment on. So when no one responded, I didn't bother to look at the column. Until the next week when I needed the link (cross-selling and all).

That's when I got a surprise. The column wasn't to be found. It had vanished from the internet.

I don't really know what happened to it. Maybe the Communists in China got to Craig and forced him to take it down. Or perhaps space aliens stole it. Or, maybe I just didn't hit submit. But that last explanation just doesn't seem believable.

Of course all this means you get another crack at Issue 99. The one before 100.

*Well I have to admit, there’s not a lot going on this week. I’m behind in my comic book reading, my cartoon watching, and even my comic book video game playing. So I’m going to do something a bit different this week – consider this less of a column, and more of a ‘run down’ of what’s going on.

Yes, I realize this column was never very verbose (how’s that for a big word?) to begin with but this week it’s going to be even less!

*Ghost Rider managed to hang onto the number 1 spot for movies. On the one hand this is good. The more money it makes, the more likely we are to see more comic book movies. On the other hand, what’s its competition?

*Gearing up for the Transformers movie, Marvel is launching a Transformers / Avengers crossover. Can you say “miserable failure?” This just strikes me as a project doomed from the beginning.

*Despite my comments in a thread over at cX, I allowed myself to get suckered back into the Wildstorm universe. As they say, the spirit is willing but the body is weak.

*I’m losing steam for the Lone Ranger comic book. It’s too much artwork and not enough story development. Sometimes the panels without talking work well for me, but right now I can’t see spending $3.00 for a book I read in 30 seconds…

*Our own Brandon Schatz has a book coming out. The Soupy Toasterson Show is getting its long awaited book with “A kiss is just a kiss”. As much as I like Lost Toast, I think I’m a little more partial to the Soupy stories. I’m going without food so I can order this book.

*That’s it. That’s the column. Short. Pithy. Did I mention short? Next week this column hits 100.

HOW?

Seriously, how did you get resucked into Wildstorm?

I mean, if you took a Wildstorm Universe book right now and tossed it on the ground next to a pile of shit, and I happened by, I MIGHT acknowledge the shit.

I haven't even had the hint of an inkling of an urge to try out a Wildstorm book since the relaunch. I just can't relate!! Smile

Actually I blame you!

I was thinking about your $40 column and thought I'd try something different, so I picked up a Wildstorm book. I haven't picked up another one....so maybe I'm safe. Smile

Welcome to Tranquility is all you need.

And thanks for the book mention! Seriously, I didn't think anyone on this board actually liked Soupy.

Welcome to Tranquility is Signature Series, isn't it? That is still safe....

Yeah, Soupy was good stuff. Sometimes a little too teen angst-ish for me. But hey, I can still watch Smallville. Wink

Welcome to Tranquility takes place in the Wildstorm Universe.

And the book has a lot less teen angst, and a little more... uncomfortableness? Whatever the word is. Anyway, I just hope everybody likes it.

Uncomfortable as in "I ate a little more for dinner then I should have" or uncomfortable as in "why does that guy keep looking at me?"

If you eat the book, the first. If not, more the second.
