Written by Craig Reade It is really tough to approach a review for a book like this one. Satire is usually a tough nut to crack. While there is a sound story, so much of the story is wrapped up in joke after joke that you really need to appreciate it to see it. And since most jokes are funniest the first time you hear/read them, spoiling the humor of this book in a review wouldn’t be appreciated by anyone. So I apologize in advance for the sparseness of the recap. You will all just have to take my word when I say that this book is damned funny.
The core of this story is a Harry Potter spoof: The main character, Tozzer, dreams of becoming an Illusionist. So each year, to escape his evil lesbian step-parents, he attends Boarboils School of Drama with his friends Rod and Horny, a wanna-be porn star. Tozzer 2: Special Editor tells the story of Tozzer’s second year at Boarboils. Among the characters in this story are a school headmaster straight out of the Matrix, a Bad Mother-Fucker Jules type straight out of Pulp Fiction who carries a foul-mouthed, backwards speaking Yoda puppet, an unintelligible muscle-bound cop reminiscent of Vin Diesel, a strange blending of Malfoy and Eminem, Michael Moore thwarted by a pizza and a phone booth, a strange midget named Fucky that I am totally in the dark about (Chucky? Maybe?). Oh, and Michael Jack... err… “Mad Jax and Bubs” hot on the trail of Tozzer’s "sweet ass" (It is ok to 'ewwwww' now, go ahead). And a hell of a lot more. Dunlop and Lumby cram in as many pop culture references as humanly possible, and they make fun of them all. Chaotic to be sure, but like any good satire, it says what we are all thinking. And it says it a lot.
Dunlop and Lumby tread a really fine line in this trade, and they do it very well. In satire, it is really important to make it as clear as humanly possible what you are spoofing, without actually spending a lot of time explaining to the reader what is being made fun of. And with the sheer volume of targets in Tozzer 2, the fact that there is only one minor character am baffled about (Fucky) speaks volumes about the job they did. For me, every other character was clearly defined; I never had to stop and try to figure out who a character was supposed to be in order to get a gag. Not that every joke is a laugh riot, but enough of them hit the mark to keep the story moving.
The art plays a key role in the success of this book. Peter Lumby does a terrific of creating characters that looked just enough like their counterparts in popular culture, but unique enough to be recognizable on their own. There are just as many visual gags as there are humorous plot devices, which makes Tozzer a much more complete comic experience. The characters are distinct and recognizable, and the “celebrity cameos” are quite easy to spot. The blocky style is a perfect fit for a humor book like this one as well. And while the original issues of this story were black and white, for the trade they enlisted the services of Eric Erbes for the welcome addition of color. While I have nothing against black and white comics, the color really does improve the quality of the product. A good move, I think.
I don’t want to sell this book short by saying too much. Tozzer 2 is a story that you have to read to appreciate. It’s wrong, it’s nasty. It doesn’t pull any punches. And since we seem to be in a world where pulling punches is expected, where even the most insane things are to be accepted with open arms and not mocked, it is wonderful to have something honest, something different from the norm. And since it mocks just about everything held sacred by this generation in terms of entertainment, it is sure to be accessible by just about anyone who reads it. Need more convincing? Check out this 8 Page Preview. Just a small taste of the book, but a pretty good one at that.
Tozzer 2: Special Edition is due out November 2nd, just a couple short weeks away. Be sure to ask for it in your local comic shop!

The student*not necessarily a well-prepared student*sat in his life science classroom staring at a question on the final exam paper. The question directed: Give four advantages of breast milk. What to write? He sighed, and began to scribble whatever came into his head, hoping for the best. 1. No need to boil. 2. Cats can't steal it. 3. Available whenever necessary. Um. So far so good...maybe. But the exam demanded a four-part answer. Again, what to write? Once more he sighed. He frowned. He scowled. Then sighed again. But suddenly, he brightened. He grabbed his pen, and triumphantly he scribbled his definitive answer: 4. Available in attractive containers.
