Not too long ago, I covered Brodie’s Law in Still on the Shelf, and found it to have a great deal of promise. As I said then, I feel the real “hook” of this series happened in the third issue, so I was really curious to see what direction this story took. So far, I am not disappointed.

This issue starts as Jack Brodie has just made it back from his first undercover, “soul-stealing” mission, where he infiltrated Stick’s Place, and posed as a body guard named Ronnie. The experience very new to him, he barely accomplished his task before reverting back to his normal body. He later decided to try again, this time more proficient, he gets information about who set him up, and takes the first steps towards revenge.

In all, I have to say this is one damned hard concept to write a story about, and the writers, to their credit, are doing a pretty good job of it. Explaining the facts about what is happening to Brodie is one thing, but conveying his reaction to it takes a lot more than writing, it takes artistic storytelling. And while the dark look of the book is visually interesting, I am not sure that it is doing a perfect job of helping this story along.

To be blunt, it is at times difficult to look at the pages. I have mentioned before that the panels are busy – and that is certainly no different here. And while the muted colors are a great feel for this story, the fact that there is so much going on in each and every page, adding to that the dialogue bubbles, it is almost too much. I think this is a problem that could be corrected with some time, however, and is not a killer in terms of the overall quality of the issue. If you should pick this up, I do recommend some careful reading. The art is well produced, so it shouldn’t be too much of a chore to take some time to read through this issue.

The character development is rather interesting, and the future looks bright for this title in that regard. From what I can see, it looks as if Brodie’s mental state should deteriorate slowly, as he absorbs the souls of more and more people in his quest to exact vengeance for his betrayal. And though he has only “copied” one person so far, you can already see the results of that one encounter. Balancing the need to gain information and access with his mind and body’s ability to cope with the affects of his powers should make for some interesting issues down the road. His relationship with Tomokai also gets interesting in this issue – at least to me. She could easily go from an asset to a liability.

On the whole, this was a solid issue. Any “problems” I found with it are the sort of things that should shake themselves out over time, with a little experience. This is a good underworld/crime drama, and I am curious to see what happens next. If you would like to get a copy of this issue, you can ask your local comic shop. That failing, you can always order a copy online at the Brodie's Law Store.
